Here are the comedians you can nominate for Emmys on the 2024 ballots

Voting opened June 13 and remains open until 10 p.m. (Pacific?) on Monday, June 24, to nominate people and programs for the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards. Programs must have aired between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. Note that not all programs will be eligible for the Emmys, and not all eligible programs have submitted themselves for consideration.

That said, here are the comedians you can support on this year’s ballot if the Television Academy has given you the right to vote in the 2024 Emmys. If you’d like me to write up a separate dispatch with the lists of potential performer and writing nominees, I can do that, too, but lordy lordy, it’d be another forty pages long!

Nominees will be announced July 17, with a final round of voting from Aug. 15-26, and winners announced Sept. 7-8 during the Creative Arts awards, and Sept. 15 live on ABC.

If you’re wondering where the Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category is this year (you know, the one pictured above where Key & Peele won in 2016), there’s a semi-rational explanation from the Television Academy. Last year, they moved Last Week Tonight into the category against SNL and A Black Lady Sketch Show (with John Oliver and crew winning out). This year, they only have four prospective submissions in SNL, Last Week Tonight, plus After Midnight and Painting With John, so instead of allowing nomination voting, with a jury instead deciding which two of those four will go forward?!?

For the writing categories, the first-round Emmy ballot lists programs and episodes but not the names of the writers, so, um, yeah. There are more than 100 different comedy episodes up for writing, animated and live-action against one another, including all of the eps of the last season of Reservation Dogs?! So, um, yeah. https://www.emmys.com/sites/default/files/ballots/writing-2024-v1.pdf

Vying for nominations, though, for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series, are the staffs of After Midnight, The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Painting With John, Real Time with Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Fewer stand-ups put their names in the hat for whatever reason for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special. Among those who did: Alex Edelman, Amy Schumer, Donnell Rawlings, Luenell, Chris Fleming, The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse – Moscow Tools, Dave Chappelle, Gary Gulman, Hannah Gadsby’s Gender Agenda, Jacqueline Novak, Jenny Slate, Jim Gaffigan, Joe Pera, John Early, Katt Williams, Kevin Hart: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize For American Humor, Kevin James, Kountry Wayne, Leo Reich, Matt Rife, Michelle Wolf, Mike Birbiglia, Mike Epps, Neal Brennan, Nikki Glaser, Pete Davidson, Rachel Feinstein, Ralph Barbosa, Ramy Youssef, Ricky Gervais, Rory Scovel, Sam Jay, Shane Gillis, Taylor Tomlinson, Tig Notaro, Tom Segura, Tracy Morgan, and Trevor Noah.

    — Knowing that both the Variety Special and Writing For a Variety Special noms usually only go to people already rich and famous (and sometimes comedians get iced out entirely, if not mostly, for big names in music or other awards ceremonies), I do want to single out a few names for their writing — I’d be overjoyed if any of these comedians broke through for writing: Alex Edelman, Chris Fleming, Gary Gulman, Jacqueline Novak, Mike Birbiglia, Nikki Glaser, Taylor Tomlinson. I think Ramy might be famous enough to not need my boost, but obviously him, too.

And for your consideration, here are 239 pages of individual acting performances submitted for various categories! https://www.emmys.com/sites/default/files/ballots/performer-2024-v1.pdf

Remember, if you have the ability to vote, the deadline is Monday night, which is tomorrow!
