Last Month’s Specials + Double-Checking The Q1 Stats For 2024 Stand-Up Comedy and Beyond

YouTube is funny in sometimes unintentional ways, such as not truly being as global as you think it is, which you learn when you travel outside of the United States only to find some videos aren’t available in your territory. Amazon has territorial issues, too. I mean, it’s not completely surprising since not all streaming platforms have gone global (which is how Netflix has maintained its dominance in 2024). But it is surprising when, say, you’re an independent journalist trying to keep track of new stand-up comedy releases of 35 minutes or longer, so I found myself adding even more search variations on YouTube. And that has led to some “new” specials from February, January and even last December popping up that hadn’t popped up before?!? Anyhow. All that is to say that we still lack a basic reference for tracking stand-up comedy specials these days. I’m doing what I can. If you’d like to help me out, please do! Thanks. Alrighty then.

SUBTOTAL: 50 HOURS for March 2024

February 2024 revised updates: Previously overlooked Stuart B. Thompson: Conditional Love, Nicole Byer: An Evening of Crowd Work, and Felicia Madison: Better Than Sex; plus three 20-minute sets, from Indian comedians Ravi Gupta, Rajjat, and Amar. So that month’s stats now count 38 hours, 21 half-hours.

January 2024 revised updates: Previously overlooked Pakistani-Australian Sami Shah: Successful Comedian, and a half-hour from Dustin Ybarra. So that month’s stats now count 31 hours, plus 11 half-hours.

December 2023 revised update?! Luke Heggie, a very funny Australian stand-up, released Lowbreed on Dec. 14, 2023, so that revises the year-end 2023 total to 509 new hours.

Q1 2024 vs. Q1 2023

This year so far, January+February+March, we’ve seen at least 119 new “hours” of stand-up released online, and 44 half-hours.

Compared to 2023, last year’s first three months witnessed 124 new “hours” and 49 new half-hours.

Amazingly still on a torrid pace considering most of this year’s comedy specials are from different stand-ups.

NOTE: Again, I must clarify that all of these numbers are based on what I know is out there and accessible to audiences in the United States. Who knows how many other new comedy specials have been released in other countries on platforms that aren’t available for viewing here. No, really. Who knows? Do you know? If so, can you please tell me? Thanks!
